Fred Funk, President of Funk’s Farm Market & Garden Center, Inc., was born and raised in Lancaster County, PA. He began his agricultural career at a young age by selling produce at farmer’s markets. In 1963, at the age of 18, he founded Funk’s Farm Market as a one-man operation. Today the market has gained 14 major additions and 130 employees. It has transitioned from a shoebox income to a multi-million dollar farm market and garden center.

Over his 40+ years in the horticultural industry, Mr. Funk has been active in the agricultural community. He was active on the Board of Directors for the PA Certified Farm Market Association for 13 years, serving as President for eight years. He also served on the Department of Agriculture’s PA Vegetable and Marketing Executive Committee for nine years. In addition to his involvement in the agricultural community, his peers have recognized him for his outstanding achievements in the farm market field. He was recognized nationally on the cover of American Vegetable Grower in 1971 and received the first Farm Market Hall of Fame award in 1976. Most recently, Funk’s implemented the first European high tunnel in the United States in order to grow early strawberries. This venture was funded in part by a research grant from the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers.

Funks Farms was founded in 1873 by Amos G. Funk. As a dairy farmer, Amos delivered milk door to door throughout Millersville and Lancaster County. The farm was sustained by two generations to follow.

Finally, in 1963 the open-air farm market was formed by Frederick Funk. He diligently built the business reinvesting all of its profits back into it. In 1972, the market was enclosed providing security and protection from the elements. In the early 80’s, over 240 acres of produce were being harvested. Today there are over 1.2 acres of growing greenhouses, more than a half acre of retail greenhouses, and over 2.5 acres of Nursery and Perrenial areas. The other retail areas exceed12,500 square feet. His hard work and determination has paid off.

In 2002, Funks incorporated as Funk’s Farm Market & Garden Center, Inc. Frederick Funk was named president. Today he is still active in the everyday operations of the business.

After successfully providing customers with quality products for over 40 years, we have established strong roots in the local community.

With the recent change in consumer concern regarding healthier eating, including less preservatives and less chemicals, Funk’s Farm Market’s involvement in community wellbeing is even further stregnthened. The public is aware more now that ever of the tremendous nutritional benefit of eating farm fresh produce. Also, Americans are spending a higher percentage of their disposable income on ornamental horticulture. Most Europeans spend three times higher percentage of their income on flowers and plants per capita. It is extremely common for European industry trends to flow through to American soil.
